Volunteer spotlight: Sabita Bora Karapan

Sabita has been a volunteer with SOSD since 2016. She started off as a Shelter Team volunteer, and ventured into Rehoming Team a year later. Most recently she has extended her dedication and personable character in our 5 (wo)man team for Volunteer Management!

Her team ICs and peers sing high praises of Sabita’s commitment, consistency and passion. She’s also a regular handler for one of our special dogs Logan (seen in the pic- please note she is the only one that Logan will approach for pats and affection). Logan may not be easy but she never gives up on him. She works on his issues, gains his trust and help him to overcome his fears to the extent that he’s always so happy to see her. She also does not hesitate to lend a helping hand and guiding other newer volunteers. Not only is she just a kennel volunteer, she has also helped our dogs find good homes.

“Volunteering in a shelter was something I’ve wanted to do for as long as I can remember. I am the girl that goes to a party spends time on the floor with the dog and ignoring people. One day, i found myself in a bit of a limbo professionally and personally and quite frankly down in the dumps. So I signed myself up and now I can’t imagine life without SOSD. Saturdays walking the dogs are the best part of my week. no matter how exhausted, spending time with the dogs fills my heart with joy. I am fuelled on doggy kisses and wagging tails. I even wake up earlier to scrub floors and clean poop because it means extra time with the dogs. Mum wishes I have as much enthusiasm with cleaning at home. Helping doggos get placed into loving homes and discovering the joys of comfy beds after a life of hard floors or outdoors is just the best feeling in the world.

I’ve also made some dear friends, my fellow volunteers are pretty cool people. To new volunteers or those thinking of signing up just do it ! You won’t regret it.”
