“Ed and I have always wanted to have our own pet dog. However, we had a lot of questions, doubts, and concerns about how to look after one when both of us are working… Fortunately, God provided when we chanced upon an SOSD Adoption Drive at Bishan Junction 8. Despite visiting other adoption drives and seeing plenty of dogs, little did we know that this black mongrel with a crooked L-shaped tail (and her fosterer) would answer our prayers.
Almost two months ago, after some interviews and playdates, Phoebe came over to do a “home stay” with us. Minutes after the fosterer left, she pooped and peed in her crate — seriously daring our determination to keep her. In fact, she continued to pee (and sometimes poo) in the house for weeks, whenever a sudden sound or movement scared her. She also chewed up her bed and toys. Conversely, we struggled to shift our lifestyle to fit her morning AND evening walks – the tiring trick for working parents. Sometimes, we got worried that she won’t get accustomed to us, and vice versa. Well, I guess, transitions normally come with teething pains, right?
Indeed, our love for Phoebe continues to grow day by day. Every day, she greets us and welcomes us home with so much excitement! She is a bubbly, lovely and energetic dog who enjoys spending time with us regardless of whether we are working in the study, sleeping on the couch, or playing with her on the carpet. She reminds to be less of a workaholic and enjoy the time with family and friends more. (It seems like Phoebe goes for playdates more often than I meet my friends. Haha!) She is also very calm and friendly towards all our house guests. That’s a huge plus!
Nowadays, Phoebe seems so much more comfortable with us and the house. She has established her resting areas, chosen her favourite toys, and figured out a way to tell us when she is hungry or when she has the urge to relieve herself. While we’re still struggling to bathe her and to resist in overfeeding her, we better understand things that would potentially stress her out. I guess, just as with any other relationship, all parties take time to get used to each other…
So, what’s next for us? We will be bringing Phoebe for her six-week obedience training, transitioning her out of her crate, and teaching her not to steal our socks like a house elf! Whee! 😁 ”
