“I was interested in getting another companion for my senior dog, Malone, as another dog of mine, his best friend of 12 years just left him. I went down to an adoption drive organised by SOSD with some friends. I was specifically looking for a dog that received few to no enquires, or were deemed “difficult”. I was then directed to Donna.
My first impression of her was that she was affectionate and sweet. She also appeared very alert and had the makings of a good guard dog. I decided to give her a try as I did not think that she was as difficult as what people might think she is.
I also have had experiences with difficult dogs in the past so I took it on as an obligation to continue to rehabilitate her. She didn’t pose any issues with us during our initial meeting and homestay trial. I was also very heartened during our first walk together; she was easy on the leash and took my cues well despite trying out on an unfamiliar route around my neighbourhood.
We are really happy to have another dog join our family, and Malone is pleased to have a youngling under his wing. She has daily morning walks with Malone, and sleeps on her favourite bed by the front door, guarding the gate.
I think it is important to remember that all dogs are unique in their personality and past experiences. They are as capable and willing as any other dog in showing affection and loyalty, as long as there is consistent training and commitment by owners.”
