Twinkle was one of the original dogs rescued when SOSD first took over an abandoned shelter which would become our current centre (Watch our struggles when the shelter was first taken over: https://youtu.be/TXLZVVkegK4, https://youtu.be/SHCspLCl0QA).
She was one of the sweetest dogs. The following year, she met the most loving adoption family possible, who renamed her Kaya, and treated her like their daughter. Her owner, Lucinda, got pregnant, and Kaya grew up with her twin sisters. Once, Kaya ran away when her family was on holiday (Woofsletter_2015V2.pdf). That episode brought them even closer together.
Unfortunately, the bliss was not to last. Kaya was diagnosed with genetic kidney failure last year. Her body was breaking down. Lucinda and family never gave up on Kaya, even though it meant frequent vet visits and mounting hospital bills. Kaya had to be administered medication and fluids daily, but her family never once thought about abandoning Kaya.
Yesterday, after a year battling renal failure, Kaya lost her life to the illness. Her family was going to bring her back to America with them when she got better, but that plan never got fulfilled. Instead of dying in a shelter, abandoned and unwanted, Kaya died, surrounded by her loving family.
We share Kaya’s story today, in the hope of telling everyone how important it is for rescue dogs to be adopted into homes. The shelter is only a temporary holding area, and no dog should have to grow old, and die in a shelter environment.
Lucinda and Ryan, you showed everyone, what it means to be a great pet owner. You taught us the meaning of love, responsibility and respect for life. Thank you for caring for Kaya for 2 years, until to her final moments.
